Referral for Treatment

Professor Rob Middleton leads a private orthopaedic hip clinic at HSU. During your consultation, Professor Middleton will take your history and conduct an examination. He will then advise whether any tests and investigations are required to make a diagnosis and develop your treatment plan.

If a patient seen by Professor Middleton does not need surgery, they will be directed to the most appropriate services at HSU to improve their condition.

On-Site Imaging

If you need an X-ray or MRI scan as part of initial investigations, you can access these on-site through our imaging services. Patients at HSU benefit from the comfort of our Open Upright MRI Scanner, which is particularly beneficial for patients with mobility issues, or with claustrophobia.

Referral for Surgery (Private or NHS)

If surgery is required, Professor Middleton can either book you directly into a private hospital, or make an NHS referral directly to University Hospitals Dorset – without you needing to return to your GP.

Professor Middleton treats patients at The Bournemouth Nuffield Hospital, the Harbour Hospital Poole and the Private Patients Unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.  All Robotic Hip Surgery is carried out at the Bournemouth Nuffield Hospital.

Prehabilitation & Rehabilitation Support

Our Integrated Rehabilitation Centre provides dedicated support for soft tissue injuries, prehabilitation, rehabilitation, and recovery from orthopaedic procedures: helping you to return to your daily activities and improve your quality of life.

Professor Rob Middleton

Meet Professor Rob Middleton – Orthopaedic Hip Specialist

Professor Rob Middleton is currently a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Dorset, Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of the Orthopaedic Research Institute at Bournemouth University. Privately he works at the Bournemouth Nuffield, Harbour Hospital and the Private Patients Unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

His Orthopaedic training was at the Middlesex Hospital London and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore.  He completed specialist Hip speciality training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia.

He was a member of NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), developing guidelines for the treatment of Osteoarthritis in the NHS. He worked as Clinical Lead for Hip and Knee replacement at the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement to improve joint replacement in the NHS.

Robotic Hip Surgery

Performing his first robotic surgery back in 1995, Professor Rob Middleton is one of the early pioneers of robotic surgery. He now has completed more Mako Robotic Hip replacements than any other surgeon in England. To help you understand, he developed the Virtual Reality Video at the Orthopaedic Research Institute.

This App is free and was developed by Professor Rob Middleton at the Orthopaedic Research Institute at Bournemouth University. Each course has set modules covering every aspect of the topic. The modules are suitable for both healthcare professionals to update their knowledge but also suitable for the public. Simple understandable terms are used together with clear illustrations and videos.

Robotic Hip Surgery has 12 modules and is suitable for both patients and healthcare professionals. It takes you through the theory and practicalities of robotic hip surgery and how it has transformed hip replacement.

ERAS,Enhanced Recovery after Surgery,  this course explains how recovery after surgery has been transformed for the better. Major surgery such as hip replacements can be performed as daycases. The modules cover the latest research and clinical practice.

FAQs: Orthopaedic Hip Clinic

What does an Orthopaedic Hip Consultant do?

An orthopaedic hip consultant is a medical specialist who diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions affecting the hip joint. They are highly skilled in addressing a wide range of hip-related issues, including hip pain, arthritis, fractures, and injuries. Having taken a history and examination, our Orthopaedic Hip Specialist Professor Rob Middleton will determine whether any tests and investigations are required to make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

What is orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the care of the musculoskeletal system and disorders, including bones, joints, muscles, and tendons – from sports injuries to degenerative diseases like arthritis. Orthopaedic specialists are trained to treat a wide range of conditions, from trauma (such as fractures and dislocations) to chronic conditions (like arthritis or tendonitis). Orthopaedics includes both non-surgical treatments (such as rehabilitation and injections) and surgical procedures (such as joint replacement or ligament repair).

Do I need a referral to see an Orthopaedic Consultant?

No, at our orthopaedic hip clinic, you don’t need a GP referral to book an appointment with Professor Rob Middleton. We offer direct access to consultant care, allowing you to seek a second opinion or specialist advice without needing to see your GP first.
