New Specialist Spinal Pain and Sciatica Clinic Launches to Support Patients
We are pleased to announce the launch of our new specialist Spinal Pain & Sciatica Clinic in Bournemouth, offering further assessment and treatment options for people living with persistent or chronic spinal pain or sciatica.
For some people, spinal pain persists despite previous treatments such as physiotherapy, exercise or medication. This can affect everyday life and create uncertainty about what to try next. For those who have not found relief or are facing long waits for treatment, knowing where to turn can be difficult.
Our new Spinal Pain and Sciatica Clinic offers a clear next step, bringing together experienced clinicians and a wide range of services to provide patients with fast access to specialist care, all in one place.
Based at Health Sciences University (HSU) in Bournemouth, the clinic draws on the university’s expertise in health sciences, research and education to support an evidence-based approach to assessment and treatment.
Dr Neil Langridge, Director of HSU Clinical & Rehabilitation Services, said:
“Sciatica can be highly disabling, significantly affecting an individual’s quality of life. At HSU, we bring together a team of experts with the knowledge and skills to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care. We are delighted to offer this high-quality, fast-track service, ensuring our community can access timely, specialist assessment and personalised treatment to support recovery and improve outcomes.”
A collaborative, integrated approach to supporting patients with spinal pain and sciatica
Spinal pain can be complex, and every patient’s experience and needs are different. Our clinic is delivered by a team of specialists with extensive expertise in assessing and managing persistent back pain, sciatica and nerve-related spinal conditions. A collaborative, multidisciplinary approach underpins our structured pathway, ensuring treatment options are personalised, carefully considered and recommended only where clinically appropriate.
Expert-led assessment, diagnosis and treatment
The pathway begins with an assessment by a specialist spinal physiotherapist, who evaluates the patient’s symptoms, movement and nerve function to help determine whether further investigation or treatment may be appropriate.
In some cases, an MRI scan is needed to help identify the cause of symptoms and ensure any treatment, including injections, is accurately targeted and appropriate. MRI scans are available on-site at HSU in Bournemouth, with a rapid-access option that does not require a GP referral.
Following the assessment, patients can discuss their findings and potential treatment options with a pain specialist consultant. Where appropriate, treatment may include targeted spinal injections, which may help reduce pain and support movement and rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation and ongoing support
Rehabilitation may also form part of treatment, helping patients work towards improved movement, strength and everyday function. HSU’s state-of-the-art Integrated Rehabilitation Centre (IRC) offers specialist rehabilitation facilities, advanced equipment and experienced clinicians to support a range of rehabilitation needs.
Spinal pain can be challenging, particularly when symptoms persist despite previous treatment. Understanding the options available and knowing where to turn for further support can make it easier to take the next step.
