Meet Dr Laith Al-Obaidi
As Clinical Director of Dorset Pain Clinic, Dr Laith Al-Obaidi leads a consultant-delivered, diagnosis-focused pain service, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of pain specialists, physiotherapists and imaging professionals. His approach is built on careful clinical assessment and precise imaging diagnosis: treatment is offered only where there is a clear indication and a well-defined anatomical target.
He is also Deputy Clinical Director for Radiology and Ultrasound Clinical Lead at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, where his responsibilities include imaging pathway development, clinical governance and the training of radiologists and sonographers.
His clinical interests span spinal and musculoskeletal pain, neuroradiology, head and neck imaging, ultrasound and non-vascular interventional radiology. His pain intervention practice includes:
- Spinal injections, including caudal, selective nerve root and facet joint injections
- Sacroiliac joint injections
- Ultrasound-guided injections for shoulder, hip, knee and other joint including hands feet and all types of soft-tissue pain
- Hydrodilatation for frozen shoulder
- Barbotage for calcific tendinopathy
- Image-guided treatment for peripheral nerve pain
- Treatment for headache and facial pain conditions
Dr Al-Obaidi combines clinical findings with MRI, CT, ultrasound and fluoroscopic imaging to identify the source of pain and select the most appropriate treatment; equally, he recognises when injection is unlikely to help and rehabilitation, surgical assessment or an alternative pathway is the better route.
Alongside his clinical practice, he holds an Honorary Visiting Associate Professorship at Health Sciences University, where he teaches radiological anatomy, imaging and image-guided intervention across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Patients are given time to understand their imaging findings, treatment options and the realistic benefits of any proposed procedure, with the aim of safe, precisely targeted care tailored to the individual.
