Physiotherapist Richard Stanley

Meet Rich

Richard qualified from the University of Southampton in 2007 and initially worked in a rotational NHS post covering all areas of physiotherapy practice. He specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy in 2009 and has since worked exclusively in MSK services across a range of advanced clinical and leadership roles. Richard is currently Clinical Lead for qualified MSK services at HSU and leads First Contact Physiotherapy services delivered on behalf of Bournemouth East Collaborative Primary Care Network.

His NHS career progressed through roles including MSK Physiotherapy Team Lead, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist (spines), First Contact Physiotherapist, and Advanced Practice clinician within spinal triage and treat services under Rheumatology. He is a recognised Advanced Practitioner in MSK under NHS England.

Alongside his clinical work, Richard has maintained a strong involvement in education, teaching on physiotherapy programmes at the University of Southampton, University of Winchester, and Health Sciences University. He continues to teach on the pre-registration Physiotherapy Master’s programme and leads clinical education for student placements within clinical services.

Richard’s clinical focus includes spinal and musculoskeletal conditions such as neck and back pain, sciatica, cervicogenic headaches, and complex or persistent presentations that have not responded to standard care. He also specialises in assessing patients where symptoms are not resolving as expected and supporting appropriate escalation where needed, including imaging, specialist opinions, injections, or surgical referral when appropriate.

Patients seeing Richard can expect a thorough and expert assessment with a clear explanation of their symptoms and options for management. His approach combines evidence-based conservative care such as exercise, manual therapy, lifestyle advice and education, alongside honest guidance on when additional investigations or specialist intervention may be the most appropriate next step.
